Brewers' spent grain and wheat prices diverge
For several months now, the French and world economies have been confronted with an increase in the price of cereals and in particular that of wheat.
Several factors are the cause:
- The political climate between Ukraine and Russia.
- The India Embargo.
- Global warming.
- Rising global demand.
Wheat production is not high enough to meet global needs . A strong tension on wheat is felt.
Since 2021, the price of wheat has doubled , going from €190 per tonne of wheat at the start of 2021 to €438 per tonne of wheat in May 2022, a record price.
Following the agreement between Ukraine and Russia to open Ukraine's maritime routes, the price then stabilized, creating a hollow range between €320 and €340 per tonne.
A price that is still very high, because the tension on wheat production remains intense despite this progress.
The solution: a new raw material
The current situation then pushes food producers to increase their costs or to integrate new raw materials such as: brewers' spent grain flour .
The economic benefits of spent grains
Unlike wheat, spent grain is an economically stable material, because it does not depend on any yield. Indeed, spent grain is a by-product, it does not use any agricultural land to be produced since it is created in the brewers' tanks.
It is then a whole new resource which is offered to industrialists and craftsmen using wheat.
Spent grain flour makes it possible to reduce the proportion of wheat flour in a recipe and therefore to limit costs compared to the purchase of wheat.
