Pourquoi consommer de saison ?

Why eat seasonal food ?

Eating seasonal vegetables and fruits is important in many ways: in relation to ecology , to the flavors of the products, but also in relation to the economic advantage that you derive from it!

With the multitude of fruit and vegetable choices in supermarkets, we often forget to look at where they come from, but we also forget that certain fruits and vegetables should not necessarily be there depending on the season in which we find ourselves. .

We then come to talk to you a little more about the importance of seasonality in food by addressing three main arguments.

First of all, at the ecological level, because yes, eating a tomato in winter is not in the natural logic of things: “A tomato produced locally, but under a heated greenhouse, generates about 4 times more greenhouse gases than the same tomato produced in the right season. “.

To take the example of the tomato: a tomato sold in stores in February will have traveled many kilometers by plane, boat or truck. Either very polluting means of transport and that's without taking into account the energy impact of the heated greenhouse in which the tomato will have grown. This greenhouse will simulate the natural growing conditions of the tomato by reproducing a climate conducive to harvesting this fruit throughout the year.

Then, in terms of food and the flavors on our plates, we will find many more flavors in seasonal fruits and vegetables. These will have followed their natural annual growth cycle following the cold and hot seasons. They then have time to be completely ripe before traveling, being stored and being put up for sale. These fruits and vegetables will then be rich in flavor unlike the tomato harvested in winter which may be bland and even mealy in terms of texture.

Finally, fruits and vegetables are often less expensive when they are in season. They are generally harvested locally, travel less and do not need to grow in a heated greenhouse.

In addition, the fruits and vegetables displayed in supermarkets are sorted and many are wasted, because they do not fit into the “standards”. We have been hearing more and more about “ugly” fruits and vegetables for a few years now, this has made it possible to democratize the fact of consuming fruits and vegetables that do not correspond to the usual selection criteria. These are then often sold less expensive in order to publicize this new initiative in supermarkets.
